Japanese people traditionally wore seperate items of clothing for thier upper and lower body sections, however the Kimono is a single item of clothing that was cut from long strands of fabric and sewn together.
Kimonos were also worn by Samuris in the past and were influenced by traditional clothing of China called hanfu, serveral changes have occured in the history of the Kimono that has seen them change slightly over time.
Kimono making is an art form in Japan as traditionally they were made by hand, they were also taken apart for washing and then even re-sewn for wearing again, however modern fabrics and modern cleaning have made this a rare occasion today.
Kimonos are also worn in various sports including, kendo and sumo wrestling, men's kimonos are a lot simpler than women's kimono's in designs and sleeve lengths.
Formal Kimono's are generally made from high quality silk, these tend to be higher price than their cotton or polyester counterparts, silk kimono's are used a lot in traditional weddings and can even change in style during the different seasons.
